I'm also thinking lair actions in the form of heavily obscuring the lair, some blood bendy shit, and a dead sailor (specter) summon.A place to discuss the latest version of Dungeons & Dragons, the fifth edition, known during the playtest as D&D Next. This encounter is based off of the cove reef insert in the back of GOS so there is also a chance of having a (SEVERELY weakened, like maybe one breath weapon then dip out) young bronze dragon to help if they find and rescue it from the hags, which is very possible and not that difficult it just requires stealth and exploration instead of guns blazing so my party will probably find her haha. Or she allows a long rest because she's that confident and prepares a Sabre tooth and some hallucinatory terrain in the meantime. ![]() although she will be engrossed in her own schemes at the time so maybe I'll make a die roll for it. I'll definitely allow a short rest before the red hag notices her coven is dead, but I have a hard time justifying a long rest. Whether or not the party gets a rest is up to then honestly, it's going to be an item recovery mission from the red hag and the coven is more or less an obstacle during the adventure. ![]() If the sea hags aren't working as a coven then the party won't have much of an issue with them, and you'd most likely need to pump up the red hag considerably from her ToB stat block. Gives her more a little more damage output per round. Could even give her legendary actions - just minor stuff, like move or even misty step to get up close to other casters, maybe a detect, maybe cast a cantrip. If you really want to up the peril, give her a single use of Legendary Resistance and make the party sweat thinking she has three. Maybe switch out one of her second level spells for Invisibility so she can get advantage with her claws at least once. She's got Conjure Animals - maybe have her start off by summoning a saber-toothed tiger even better, maybe she's done that before the fight. If they're going to face the red hag *right after* they face the sea hags, with no time to even short rest to use hit dice, then I wouldn't beef up the red hag all that much aside from max HP. If the sea hags are working as a coven then they'll be the harder encounter. There's a lot of stuff in ToB that should probably be two or more CR ratings higher but it's typically fine. I use ToB stuff a lot but haven't run a red hag before. Tome of Beasts stat blocks do tend to skew the CR upwards sometimes but it's usually manageable.
